First you need a copy of Doom2.wad (from a genuine copy of Doom II).
It's also nice to have Doom.wad, Plutonia.wad and TNT.wad, but not essential.
Make sure they are all the latest versions. Patches are available here.
There is also a free IWAD you can use - Freedoom!

Next you need to download the online Doom ports:
Skulltag
ZDaemon

And finally, I recommend you get Internet Doom Explorer (IDE). It's a launcher that can
find servers for both Skulltag and ZDaemon, as well as another port called Odamex.

Once you have everything installed, load IDE and configure the
paths to all the important files in the Directories section of the
Options tab. Now you're ready to find a server and start playing.
